Between 2008 and 2012, whistleblower-initiated cases brought under the federal False Claims Act (FCA) and similar state laws resulted in the recovery of close to $20 billion in government dollars taken as a result of fraudulent schemes. Under the Act, private citizens can file qui tam lawsuits for healthcare fraud committed against the government and in return can receive a percentage of the recovery. Common forms of fraud include billing for nonexistent services, double billing, up-coding, submitting falsified records and offering kickbacks.
